To restore damaged and decayed teeth, composite fillings are used. Composite is a natural-coloured resin and glass mixture, which is chemically bonded to the tooth to fill a cavity. This will restore the natural strength of your teeth and also protect it from further decay.
Composite fillings are typically used as a cosmetic alternative to silver (amalgam) fillings, which contain mercury and often look out of place. Composite fillings, on the other hand, are made specifically to mimic the colour of your existing teeth, to ensure a consistent and beautiful smile. Before the filling is placed, the tooth is prepared by removing the tartar, plaque, decay or any existing filling. Following this, the treatment site is thoroughly cleaned and drained. Once the surface has been prepared, it is then etched and coated with a bonding solution, which creates a rougher texture for the composite mixture to bond to.
Next, the filling material is placed into the treatment site and moulded to match the shape of a natural tooth. Then a curing light is used to harden the material, before finally trimming and polishing the filling to provide an aesthetically pleasing and almost indistinguishable finish.
